HyperStart is an investment company that supports accelerator programs similar to YCombinator and TechStars. We work with accelerator programs that accept competitive entry for new on-line start-ups with a full-time, intensive engagement program. Hyperstart is run by WebFund, Wellington's online start-ups specialists.
In Wellington we work with Lighning Lab which opened for registration in September 2012. The Lightning Lab accelerator program is based on the TechStars model and features a 3-month-long intensive "bootcamp" to take ideas through validation, commercialisation and investment readiness. HyperStart is a founding investor of Lighning Lab and our principals are actively involved in mentoring teams going through the Lightning Lab program. In addition to Lighning Lab, HyperStart also runs an non-public acceleration program with no fixed intake. This program is by invititation only.
One of the accelerators we work with "Lightning Lab" in Wellington is scheduled to run in 2013 with the application window opening in September 2012. For teams interested in joining ANY accelerator program we recommend that you do your homework prior to submitting an application. You will be expected to have thought through your idea / venture so you can answer questions on your business competently. If you would like to contact us in the meantime please use the contact form on this website.
We know it's really hard to build a business based on sweat equity alone, and that a little experience goes a long way in helping young companies avoid common pitfalls. HyperStart provides both investment capital and expertise (“Smart Money”) to get startups going.
We work with a number of accelerator programs in New Zealand and overseas with a view to investing in "graduates" of these programs. We also help teams prepare for pitches to other investors or facilitate investment rounds.
If you want to get a taster for an accelerator program - check out "Startup Weekend". Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skill sets - primarily software developers, marketers, designers and business people - to develop a business concept and build a commercial case around it. Check out startupweekend.co.nz for more details.
